175 – Affirming the Covenant

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man

Genesis 2:23.

Genesis 2:23 showed what could be likened to Adam’s proposal to Eve. Digging deeper into this verse, an interesting observation can be made. The word ‘bone’ is et’sem (essence), its root word is atsam’ which means a many membered body. Flesh is Ba’sar from the root word Basar’ which means to bear/preach good news. The word she is zo’th from the root word zeh which means sheep. Hence, the passage can be rephrased: And Adam said, this is my many membered essence and my body that bringeth forth good news. This sheep shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Adam here as a type for the Lord, the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45) and the woman the church, His bride. Yet, for the covenant to be confirmed especially in marriage, there was be an affirmation from both sides. Hence, a response from Eve is needed.

According to Paul, Genesis 2:23 was simply a pictorial parable of a proposal of the second Adam, Christ to His church. Paul said ”

Ephesians 5:29-32 KJV
For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: [30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. [31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. [32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

In 1 Chronicles 11:1-3, David had been anointed and chosen of God to be King over Israel, however, it was not until all the elders came to make a covenant with Him in Hebron, that He was crowned King in the eyes and hearts of his brethren. The said to David, We are thy bone and thy flesh, thus confirming him as King, giving the answer to His “proposal” or availability and willingness to lead them as a Shepherd does His sheep.

David (meaning beloved) being about spoken here is speaking prophetically of Jesus, Matthew 3:17. 1 Chronicles 11:1-3 is the first recorded response of the bride to her groom. As it is written in psalm 65:1, it is to God the vows are performed. A vow is used to enter a covenant relationship, be it uncleanliness or sin of any kind; by our actions we make statements! The word Hebron [Chebron] means association and the root word [Chaber] means to have fellowship/ be united.  In the secret place and in communion with Him, is where our union with God is rehearsed. It was after this statement the David could conquer the heights of Zion and free Israel from their enemies.

Beloved, while the Lord Jesus has made a proposal to you from the beginning, you cannot partake all He has and is, enjoying the benefit of being one flesh with Christ, till with your mouth, you confess that you are His bone and His flesh. This is a confession of a surrender of will, desire, emotions etc that frees God to be all in all in your life and you, the sheep of His pasture.

Prayer for today: Lord Jesus, I have heard Your proposal at the beginning that I be Your body, Your bone and Your flesh. Lord, today, I choose to say yes to your proposal. I say I am Your bone and Your flesh. In You I live, move and have My being. Lead me, guide me as My shepherd, for You are My God and I am of the people of Your pasture, the sheep of Your love. Amen.

Blessings Beloved 👋
