“… Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall He find faith on the earth?” (KJV)
Upon reading this verse, where it says “… when the Son of man cometh …”, you probably thought of the Lord’s second coming at the end of the world. But beyond that, the question in this verse is relevant every day, because Jesus is Emmanuel (which means: God with us). In other words, it is not just that He has gone and would return at the end of the world, but rather He is with us every day, and as such, He is always asking: shall I find faith on the earth?
So, today, and every day, He is asking:
Will I find faith in you?
Why is it important for Him to find faith in you? Matthew 13:53-58 gives a clue. It reads: “[53] Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, that He departed from there. [54] When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? [55] Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? [56] And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” [57] So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” [58] Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (NKJV)
In this passage, we see that when Jesus came to His own town-country (Nazareth) He did not find much faith there, and the result was that He did not do many mighty works there (as said in verse 58). It shows us that when the Lord comes to you today, if He doesn’t find faith in you, He may not do many mighty works in and for you today.
When He was on earth the works He did included healing the sick, healing the lepers, opening blind eyes, opening deaf ears, casting out devils, raising the dead, turning water to wine, creating a big fishing catch, multiplying five loaves into enough to feed five thousand people with twelve baskets remaining, generating money for bills by putting gold coin in a fish’s mouth, forgiving sinners, teaching scriptures, and many more. These are the kinds of things He can do in and for you today (and every day) if He finds faith in you.
They range from spiritual things to physical things; which is why 2 Peter 1:3 says: “According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
Life in this passage refers to our natural life (which includes finances, academics, health, marriage, etc), while godliness refers to our spiritual life (which includes: prayer, ministry, personal devotion, consecration, etc). No matter the challenges of each day, they are all within the scope of the mighty works that Jesus can do; what matters is: shall Jesus find faith in you?
- Will He find you believing that He can forgive?
- Will He find you believing that He can provide?
- Will He find you believing that He can heal?
- Will He find you believing that He can change your character?
- Will He find you believing that He can turn that situation around for good?
Prayer for today:
O Lord, You are ever present with us. You are Emmanuel: God with us. As You examine me today, O Lord, please help me that You will find faith in me, so that You can do Your mighty works in my life today. Lord, Your word says in Ephesians 2:8 that we have been saved by grace through faith, and that even the faith is not our own, but is the gift of God. O Lord, please favour me with this Your gift of faith today and every day, so that when You look at me You will find faith in me. Amen.
