Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isaiah 45:22 KJV
The Phrase “Come and See” is used several times throughout the bible. It was often used as a call out of the ordinary to see something supernatural. In the book of Revelation, this phrase was used by the four living creatures to John. John, an old man at that time, had just been weeping bitterly at the sight of a scroll sealed with seven seals. This was because locked up in the scroll were God’s redemption plan and judgment for all humanity. However, for the events and writings of that book to take place, it had to be opened, eaten (read and understood), and then spoken as in the case of Ezekiel 3:1-4 and as later seen in Revelations 10:8-11. The issue though was that no one was worthy to open the book and lose its seals in all of creation. In the midst of John’s lament for this seemingly hopeless situation, one of the elders pointed his eyes to the lamb who prevailed to open the book. The book was open and God’s redemption plan revealed and the command to John was “Come and See”.
Another time this phrase was used was in John 1:45-46. There may have been Words from over thirty years prior from shepherds about a boy who was born in a manger and how the celestial angels of God visited and called this boy the Messiah. Anna the prophetess also had her side of the story for all who were expecting their messiah and now there was John speaking of a coming Christ. No doubt the people were in expectation. When Philip found Nathaneal though in John 1:45-46, and told him that He had found the Messiah, Nazareth was probably the last place he had expected that the Messiah would be associated with. Perhaps because of the size or economic stature or the lack of reputation of the town, however, in this most unlikely place, the King of the Universe walked as a man. The woman at the well in John 4 also used this phrase after encountering the Messiah. She ran to meet her kinsmen and she told them about a man who was the Messiah. A Messiah that she met in the most unlikely place, not the mountains or in Jerusalem, but by a well, speaking to a single woman who had been previously married five times.
In Revelations 12 and 17 as well, John saw two women. The woman in Revelations 17 was great Babylon, speaking of this World and the religious, economic, social, etc. structures that had been built by men. However, there was a great wonder in Revelations 12, a woman clothed with the Sun, the true bride of Christ who will birth a son to rule all nations with the rod of Iron. With all the happenings going on in the world, men’s hearts failing them for fear of what is to come, it is typically difficult for a man to look away from what is very much in front of him and see God in the midst of all this, building His Church who will govern all things. In our individual lives as well, it is very easy to magnify the events that we see all around us so much so that we belittle the power and promises of God, thereby missing out on the fulfillment of these promises. Jonah said, “Those that observe lying vanities forsake their mercy”.This means, one who is focusing on things that are contrary to the truths of God is bound to miss God’s arm of Mercy stretched out to him.
Final thoughts: God is known to move in ways that are considered ‘foolish’ to men. This is because it gives Him glory to conceal a matter. There may have been other widows in the temple when Anna met Jesus. There could have been passers-by when Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman and surely, a huge bone of contention between Jesus and the Pharisees was that they could not phantom how the messiah will be associated with anywhere outside Bethlehem. God, however, not only conceals a matter, He gives a call to “Come and see” to as many who will hear and those who are Kings look away from lying vanities and find honour in searching the promises and Words of God. As these kings search the Word, beholding His face, not only do they receive the revelation of God who is concealed to the human mind, they become transformed to His very image.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you because the things that you have concealed to many wise men in the World, you have chosen to give to me because I was precious in your sight. Help me to be diligent in answering your call. Help me to search the Scriptures and seek you with all of my heart, that I may find you. As I approach you today, let the eyes of my understanding be enlightened, that I may see You.
