39 – Let there be Light

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day

Genesis 1:1-5

Before a building is made, an architect and the owner of the building come together to devise a plan and to bring to mind the details of the building to be created. This first part is one of the most important parts of any building project. This is where the owner counts the cost, the land is surveyed, the materials needed for the building are discussed in detail and a building plan is drawn. In most situations, a visual of the building is already constructed and displayed, so that a passer-by already knows what the building will look like. At this stage, the building is as good as created; all that is left is time for it to manifest physically. The account of creation in Genesis 1 and 2 can almost look conflicting when examined critically. In Genesis 1, it seems the man was the last creation and in Genesis 2, it seems God made man, then trees and later formed animals, bringing them to him to name them. Genesis 1 is God’s blueprint or plan for the creation of man in His image and likeness. More than just a physical creation, it is God’s complete creation of man and it is concluded when God with man enters in rest on the seventh day.

This process of this creation is a series of six evenings and mornings until the seventh day. He laid a foundation for His creation by the command “Let there be Light”. To understand this command, Jeremiah 4:22-31 gives us an insight into the state of the earth Spiritually when God gave this command.

Jeremiah 4:22-23 NKJV
“For My people are foolish, They have not known Me. They are silly children, And they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.” [23] I beheld the earth, and indeed it was without form, and void; And the heavens, they had no light.

This scripture describes darkness as a state of ignorance, a void of the true knowledge of God. This knowledge and True Light is the bedrock for the new creation man. John 1:1-8 tells us that this Light is Jesus. He is the one who gives light to every man upon the earth. David in Psalm 64:6 describes the heart of man as deep and so darkness upon the deep is ignorance of the true knowledge of God in the heart. To remedy this, Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:6For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” This means that for the man in Christ, the foundation for His creation has been laid. However, just as light is the foundation for creating and sustaining everything else in God’s physical creation, including trees and animals, this light continues to shine until the perfect day, Proverbs 4:18. This is the day where man and God are completely at rest.

How does this relate to us?

Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:18 shows that as we continue to behold the face and glory of Jesus, we are transformed into His image, which is the ultimate goal of man. Like Moses, we behold God’s face and glory through fellowship. God had revealed Himself to Moses in a burning bush experience and showed Him a bit of His Glory, However, for Moses to really see the Glory of God, He had to ascend the mountain of God and remain there, Genesis 33:18-34:8. In this mountain, God revealed His name (His nature) to Moses, wrote His laws on tablets of stone, and struck a covenant with the people of Israel.

For us, we have received an initial revelation of Jesus, this knowledge was given to us as a gift and as John 17:3 says, this knowledge is eternal life. However, as we continue in fellowship with God, through the Word and Prayer in the secret place, God communes with us face to face as a man does his friend. In this secret place, the Lord writes His Laws upon our heart and every ignorance upon our heart is dispelled.

Final thoughts: There is a saying, “Read your bible, pray every day if you want to grow”. This is a true and wise saying. Though we have received the light of God in us, this light is as a seed and it grows brighter and brighter as we diligently tend to it in fellowship with God. To tend to this light could involve, listening to a sermon, reading and meditating on the Word, conversing with other believers, praying, and seeking the Lord’s face in fasting. The point however is to allow this light to grow. As it grows, every work inspired by darkness or a lack of the true knowledge of God in us gradually disappears. As 2 Peter 1:19 says, this light shines brighter and brighter until the day dawns and Christ the day Star is fully risen in our heart.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the revelation of Jesus to me when I met you. Thank you because you keep coming to me daily in the medium of Your Word as a light shining in my darkness. Help me to give due diligence to these sure Words, that it may shine brighter and brighter till I become just like you in every way. Amen.
