Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, [3] “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.” [4] He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Psalm 2:1-4 NKJV
King Nebuchadnezzar was one of the greatest Kings there was in history, so much so that the Lord in Daniel 2 referred to him as a head of Gold. The Lord Himself raised Nebuchadnezzar, made him a king of kings over nations, and set him over much of the civilized world in his day. Yet, with all this glory and splendor, God made it clear to him that his Kingdom was one that will fade away.
Jerusalem had been captured by Babylon as prophesied by the prophet Isaiah and Jeremiah, because of their sin in turning away from God. In all this, however, there were those in Babylon, who were of the God kind, Psalm 82:6: Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These were referred to as Holy Watchers, Daniel 4:17. They were men whose hearts were set on their God, though in a strange land, they prayed and maintained a portal between heaven and earth even in Babylon and they were known in Babylon, but more so in Heaven. During the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, in Daniel 2, he had a dream that none, except one who knew God could interpret. The Summary of the dream was that kings and civilizations will rise after King Nebuchadnezzar, but that in all this, there will be a little stone, cut without human hands (not created by any man-made system or decision) that will destroy all these nations and that this stone, as a Kingdom, endures forever. This Kingdom was given to one like the Son of Man, by the ancient of Days, whose hair was as wool and whose garment was white as snow. Daniel 7:9-14.
The interaction between the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man, who is Jesus, is seen throughout the scriptures, and particularly emphasized in Psalm 2. Here He was not only identified as the Son of Man, but the Son of God, who will dash all nations to pieces. In Revelations 1, Jesus is described like this Ancient of Days, having His hair white as wool, Garment pure white, and eyes like a fire. He is the lamb who prevailed to open the book in Revelations 4 and reserves the right to rule all nations. He is the stone cut without hands to smite the nations in Daniel 2. However, He is not the only Stone. Peter in 1 Peter 2:4-8 calls Him the Cheif Cornerstone, the one whom, as Psalm 2 says men must kiss or be broken to pieces. Peter also calls us lively stones, built together for a habitation of God. This simply means that Christ, being the stone cut without hands is a pattern for the other stones. As He multiplies Himself in others, the stone grows into a very great mountain, Mount Zion, Hebrews 12:18-29. This mountain is the very high mountain in Revelations 21, New Jerusalem the Bride which is as a city made without human ideas and decisions. These are they who sit in the heavens. Having overcome as Jesus promised, in Revelations 2:26-29, they are those who will break the nations to pieces.
These things, however, are not for the sweet by and by or for special saints. The bible says we are currently seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:6. We have been given authority over the nations to pull down, root, to plant, and remove Kings, Jeremiah 1:10. This is the exclusive right of those who are overcomers, those who make overcoming a daily practice; overcoming the World and all that is in it, 1 John 2:15-17. Like in the days of Daniel, it is normal that the nations will rage and try to get the yoke of the saints off their necks. Daniel was thrown to the lion’s den in Daniel 6 and his companions were thrown to the fire in Daniel 3. It is, therefore, no surprise that Christianity is the most persecuted religion. However, the authority has already been given to the Holy Watchers, the praying ones. A person who sees from the earthly realm will be afraid and even dissociate himself from Christ, but they that sit in the heavens, the realm of rulership, and having seen the complete picture, simply laugh!
Final thoughts: Jesus said in this world we will having tribulation. This is simply due to the raging of the nations. Some find it that when they were in the world, all went well, but it seemed all hell went lose the moment they came into Christ. This is expected behavior since they have been brought to the class of them who sit in the heavens. However, Jesus said be of good cheer, because I have overcome the World, John 16:33. In other words, Laugh! because I have overcome the World and in Me, You have also! Brethren, take your place in the heavens. You have dominion over the nations and also all the power of the enemy, so Laugh!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for finding me worthy to be part of this class in the heavens. Thank you, because, in You, I have overcome the World! Help me to set my eyes on things above and not be distracted by the distractions of the things beneath. Here I will see that these ragings of the nations are simply them trying to take your bands off their neck and I will see and laugh as You are laughing!
