And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; [6] And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; [7] And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. [8] For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ
2 Peter 1:5-8 KJV
The demand to love the Lord is a commandment because of His love for us and determination to draw us to Himself. Deuteronomy 6:1-5 says that there are those that are called gods, although they are not really gods. However, our command is to love God with all our might. It is idolatary when you use all your strength for your passions and have no might left for the things of God. Mark 12:29-31 shows that the Love for God is the first commandment. Deuteronomy 10:12-17 shows that it is the foreskin of the heart that keeps a person from beholding, comprehending and coming into the love of God; the love that the Lord has shed abroad in his heart.
